What is Realms of Legacy?

Realms of Legacy (RoL) is a space fantasy role-playing game for a group of 4–6 friends. One player takes the role of Game Master; the others build unique Player Characters and dive headfirst into the Veil.

It's a build-a-class system with deep customization. Start with a base Class and Specialty, then stack talents and skills to make your character truly unique. No two Guardians play the same.

Three Ways to Play

Realms of Legacy uses a simple dice pool: roll up to a mix of d6s and d8s whenever you attempt something risky or uncertain. Look for at least one 6 or higher on any of the dice and you succeed. From there, you can explore the three distinct game activities that build upon that core mechanic.

Freeform Roleplay

Time flows fluidly, driven by your actions and intentions. Resolve conflicts, explore scenes, and weave creative stories by invoking your character, the environment, and the items at hand.

Tactical Combat

Violent confrontations broken into 6-second intervals. Strategic planning and tight teamwork are your weapons. Every move matters when the clock is ticking and lives are on the line.

Veilstrider Conflict

Take the helm of a massive magitech ship and clash with enemy vessels or gargantuan entities. Coordinate your crew, hold your positioning, and secure victory among the stars.

The Setting

A little over a century ago, the nations of Gaia unlocked the secret of travel beyond their realm. Guided by the otherworldly Armorai, they built the first Veilstriders, sea-faring ships repurposed to fly among the Vilirium gases between realms, powered by plutheryte.

An arms race triggered reckless mining of Gaia's plutheryte reserves, unleashing a calamity called the Fracture, permanently corrupting and twisting the land. The major nations responded with the Plutherpact, banning further domestic plutheryte extraction.

Now plutheryte is the most coveted resource in the system, and the Veildivers were born: adventurers who brave the Veil for artifacts, ore, and rare goods. Some push even further, into the mysterious Outerveil, beyond the system's very borders.

But the Veil is no safe road. Veilfaring marauders, blood-thirsty demons, corrupting virophage, and the ever-present Void wait for those who stray too far.

Key Terms

The Veil What we refer to as outer space or the cosmos is what the creatures of this game refer to as the Veil. The unknown region beyond the boundaries of the solar system is known as the Outerveil.
The Shroud A plane of ethereal existence that mirrors the Veil, the Shroud is a realm where time flows at a fraction of its normal pace. When mortals perish, their souls drift into this shadowy expanse, wandering aimlessly, finding refuge in a mirrored realm, or falling prey to powerful entities that can move freely between the Veil and the Shroud.
Veilstriders Sea-faring ships that have been upgraded to fly through the cosmos of the Veil using their magitech Core engines and solar sails. Their crews are referred to as Veildivers.
Plutheryte A rare and ancient ore that holds pure magical energy and is highly sought after. Its origins are unknown even to the oldest entities within the Veil.
Sorce The life of the Veil and source of all magic. Powerful creatures can manipulate Sorce to cast Spells or enhance their martial prowess.
Aspects Often revered as gods of the Veil. There are six kinds of Aspects known throughout the Veil, some controlling certain domains: Stellar (stars and suns), Eternal (Void and Black Holes), Primal (Planetary), Lunar (Moons), Cosmic (natural forces), and Ascended (demigods).
Shadow Gloom Magical darkness that consumes all natural light. Divine Light does not destroy it but does suppress it. Creatures with Nightvision cannot see through Shadow Gloom.

Frequently Asked

Who made Realms of Legacy?
I'm Nick (Mr. Universe online), and I've been playing and running tabletop games for over a decade. I've been working on Realms of Legacy for a couple of years now alongside a team of friends and collaborators.
Why did you create this game?
I wanted a space fantasy game that blended crunchy tactical combat, to-the-point exploration, and engaging starship battles. I also wanted deep character customization, players who stay engaged outside their turns, and dice rolls everyone could interpret instantly.
Do I have to pay anything?
No. All rules, player options, and GM options are currently free during the open playtest phase. Download everything you need from itch.io at no cost.
What happens after the playtest?
The full Player Codex (all core rules and options) will remain free to download. The paid core rulebook will add the GM Compendium (in-depth encounter creation tools) and the Veildiver's Guide to the Veil (official setting content and worldbuilding inspiration).
Will there be a physical book?
Yes, a print-on-demand version is planned for DriveThruRPG after the game reaches full release. The digital version will launch first.
